CME

CME

There are currently 13 registered stock exchanges operating in the United States. They give traders and investors the opportunities to buy and sell an unlimited number of stocks. But what if someone wants to buy a commodity or to make a bid on future price change? That's where the futures exchanges come in. And today, we'll talk about the largest futures exchange in the United States and the second-largest in the world. Give it up for Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

The history behind the CME?

In 1898, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange began life as the "Chicago Butter and Egg Board" before changing its name in 1919. It may be funny to hear, but the first futures contract on CME was frozen pork bellies. In 1969, it added financial futures and currency contracts. The first interest rate, bond, and futures contracts were added in 1972.

In 2007 "Butter and Egg" merged with the Chicago Board of Trade, and the CME group was created. From this moment, the company became one of the largest financial exchanges in the world.

But this is not all. In 2012 CME purchased the Kansas City Board of Trade, the biggest place to trade hard red winter wheat (it's just the name, the wheat isn't red, it's rather brown). After five years, Chicago Mercantile Exchange began trading in Bitcoin futures. It was the first time for any non-crypto exchange to give such trading opportunities. As for now, you can trade contracts on Bitcoin and dozens of other cryptos with FBS.

Why is CME important?

What can we find on CME? Lots of different commodities and other products! Energies, agricultural products, currencies, metals. Also, CME has several unusual instruments for trading. Of course, we are talking about interest rates and weather futures.

Why does anyone need weather futures? Imagine that you're a farmer, and you expect the crops to grow well. Thus, you think about decent profit at the end of the year. But there are always weather risks, like thunder or hurricane. To hedge from this risk, a farmer can buy weather futures that will earn him some money in case of terrible weather. This way, the losses from poor crops will be partly compensated.

Don't forget that CME allows to trade futures for indexes and cryptocurrency, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Investors worldwide follow Bitcoin moves closely, as CME is an important part of the cryptocurrency futures market. It is often to see price gaps on CME because the exchange halts trading for weekends, and cryptocurrency is traded 24/7.

Just like other exchanges, CME is well-regulated. But to trade on it, you need to have an American id card. Good that you can trade hundreds of instruments with FBS from whenever you are!
